The Big 12 and Kansas both record it as 55-53-9. Only Missouri has it as 54-54-9. But it is nice to know that the only way you can communicate is by making up words. I guess that is representative of Missouri education.

You know....if cops are writing some of the crap on here, you are only making yourselves look worse in the eyes of people who already hate cops anyway. There are good cops and bad cops everywhere, but I bet you don't see them bickering in the public. If you have a problem with a fellow employee, take it up with your sheriff or chief and try to earn a little respect from people. It's bad enough other people on here are trashing you...must you be unprofessional and trash yourselves?

In regards to the first posting about Mass parking, I felt SO sorry for you the second I read your blog. It was written so nicely, nothing mean about it, just a simple request for common courtesy. And I thought to myself, this person is going to get chewed up and spit out by posting that in this blog! And I was right. The arrogant, self centered, simple minded, uneducated, "it's all about me get out of my way" JACKASS proved me right about the caliber of people we have to endure in this world. Too bad we all can't just drive on any side of the road we want, how fast we want, park on the sidewalks if we want. Or spit in peoples faces if we don't like what they just said to us. Or urinate in public anywhere just because we felt the urge. Or hey, just quit paying our taxes, utilities, etc. because we just don't feel like it anymore. Oh yeah, most importantly, we should all walk around stoned and intoxicated. And armed with our automatic assault weapons cuz you never know when you might have to defend yourself when someone askes you to please consider their feelings. How dare they suggest ways to make anything better in this world! It's everyone for themselves right? You betcha. Thanks for taking the bait whoever responded to the original blog, once again you gave us something negative to blog about.

Whatever happened to courteous behavior in this country? It is no wonder that the U.S. is hated by most of the world. We are arrogant yet uneducated and seem to be proud of the fact. It used to be that honesty and hard work was appreciated because it was the right thing to do. Now many look down on those ideals and think you are stupid for not cutting corners and looking for the government handout. This country does not have to worry about terrorists or outside invasion. We are all too willing to destroy ourselves by being fat stupid and lazy.

To the person that wrote about not parking on 4th street during mass...if you have a problem with that you shouldn't take it up with the Catholic Church goers that park there. We part there because the city allows parking on the street. If you have an issue with that, then you need to take it up with the city.

Dane - I have read this blog a few times over the last few weeks but have never participated by posting a comment until now. It seems to me that many of the negative comments would go away or at least be toned down if people were required to give their names. If you want to allow people to remain anonymous how about another (moderated?) blog that required everyone to share their identity? Maybe you could suggest topics that you feel need to be addressed by the public and provide for community surveys on issues that could become a useful tool to help elected officials understand what public sentiment might be on a particular issue.

The people of Anderson County should look more closely. Whether you like it or not open your eyes, you have alot of problems that need dealt with and the law enforcement is just one, as far as drugs hello! Wake up how many of you know certain individuals on the so called force who are in the closet so to speak. Maybe if that particular area gets cleaned up first it might set a example for others as well. The so called "Get off the Grass" issue is a joke considering our own enforcers of our laws children are some of the biggest smokers or should we say also pill poppers. And why does this county hire officers that were not wanted in other counties because of not so clean dealings? Something to think about for sure. Dirty deals keep on coming as long as we the people allow it to continue. Quack Quack

While it is true that parking on both sides of 4th street during Mass means that drivers must slow down and be careful, it is also true of other areas: several other churches, the Anderson County Sale barn all day every Tuesday, garage sales, household auctions in residential areas. I don't park on any street during any church service. I seldom do garage sales and I never go to the sale barn, but it doesn't hurt me to drive a little more slowly and be cautious in these areas. Life is not just about me.

Why is there so much anger out there? Everyone is so angry. Rage might be a better word. Seriously, this seems to be an epidemic of enormous amounts! Is it stemming from someting in our food preservatives? Toxins in the air we breathe? Radiation from 25 years of microwave useage? Or maybe these computer monitors we spend so much time on are emitting a rage inducing poison. Everywhere you look these days, mom's killing babies, school shooting rampages, child abduction/rape/killings. It seems to be the younger generation that is committing more cruel and unusual crimes. 20 years ago you didn't here about these kinds of things. It is heartbreaking. On that note, good morning and have a rage-free day!
Thursday, April 16th 2009 @ 8:25 AM

Posted by 3Stage: reply to anon:

You're right anon. It's rage, pure and simple. But it's rage for the least of reasons. Society, particularly the younger set in its 20s, grew up under the impression that everything was easy and all would be provided- I "am", therefore, satisfy me. When early adulthood didn't turn out as low-impact as they thought they were promised, their tantrums manifested in these innane blog posts and calls to the Phone Forum in the Review. There's lots of anxst in other age groups too- particularly in this community the jealousy is overwhelming - but these kids in their 20s are the epitome of selfish indulgence. My caveat: some in their 20s are great kids, work hard, give back and have direction, but those represented with the "tats" and the "dats"... well, you see what I mean.

The thing that I see with so many of the 20 somthings is the lack of basic education. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of sharp kids but it amazes me the number of them that don't have more than about a 5th grade level of communication skills and virtualy no understanding of American history. I don't see how these kids continue to get passed through the school system. Is it the no child left behind thing that keeps us from flunking people when deserved or is it that we can't flunk them because it might damage them emotionally? There just doesn't seem to be any consequence for failure anymore.
Thursday, April 16th 2009 @ 1:32 PM

Posted by 3Stage:

I think you hit the nail on the head. Somewhere in the Federal Department of Education it was determined that it was better to pass a kid than to ever hold him back – this is policy in USD 365 and most other districts- at least I haven't heard of a kid flunking a grade in decades. They have to meet credit requirements in high school to graduate, but by then the damage is done. In these 20-somethings we're seeing the outcome of this policy- "tats" and "dats."

You two are so right. I don't know how many people I have encountered over the years even college graduates who can't even spell correctly. I know I don't always write with proper grammer, particularly starting sentences with a prepasition, or using run on sentences. But it really bothers me that people use for example the word threw instead of through, to instead of too, there instead of their, you get the picture. This is simple grammer that we learned in grade school. How can you graduate not only from high school but college too and not know how to spell properly? Anyway, there is a certain casualness now in our society that can be disturbing somnetimes. Parents, teachers, other role models, are afraid to hold kids accountable for their actions and teach them respect. I think the lack of respect is the biggest disappointment for me. Hard to blame the kids though, when the only parenting they receive is from tv, video games, internet, or their friends. Sad.

Or since rather than sense, prepasition rather than preposition, virtualy rather than virtually. A hundred thirty years ago, students at a rural school in Arkansas hung the teacher by the neck until dead. I think maybe we're being a little too judgmental. I believe the 60's had more than a fair share of pot heads, rioters, looters, and hate crimes. We need to give the young people a break. Most all of us grow up and get old sooner or later.

I truly believe that when the government took away parent's rights to reprimand their children as they saw fit, has changed society forever. I believe in spanking and I did spank my child when he/she really needed it. My child is 20 years old and has respect for his/her self and others. I say bring back the back bone to our schools and start giving out spankings again. Show whom is in authority once and for all.

Does this describe you? The Drama Queen...Characteristics - the term refers to any gender who spends most of their day complaining, turning every mild inconvenience into a full blown problem. Self-centered, disruptive and incapable of forethought, they reject the most obvious solutions just to prolong the situation and make every confrontation personal. Drama queens are never satisfied and are impossible to work with.

I agree that an alarming number of children and young adults are becoming more violent and less educated. However, our society as a whole, regardless of age, is becoming less civil and productive. I believe the main culprit is that there is no real consequence for failure. We don't keep a child back in school when they don't perform. We don't do anything but slap the hands of people when they continue to break the law. Poor performance in the workplace is tolerated and often accepted as the norm. Our children are becoming increasingly sedentary and obese. All in all, the bar has really been lowered in this country.

I do not believe that tats make someones a terrible person. What gives people the right to judge, just because someone is a little different should you treat them like they have a disease because they aren't like you? If we were all alike imagine what the world would be like. Being different and each having their own likes is what makes us all individuals. We all need to see through to the inside not just what they see on the outside. Stereotyping and racism our all in the same category I feel. I do agree that our school system is failing our children by the no child left behind. This is just causing children to continue when they are needing help in some academics and something should be done to get them the help they need to succeed not just pass them on and say oh well.

I just have to say that I am 27 years old, have a college degree, work a full-time job Mon-Fri, and another part-time job on the weekends, and I have 3 tattoos and I can spell. sum peep talk like dat on purpose. It doesn't mean they don't know how to spell or that they are stupid. People get in the habit of typing like that from text messaging and instant messaging. There is nothing wrong with "20 somethings" and their tattoos and educations. Tattoos used to have that stereotype, but not anymore. I am sorry if you don't like that they are now on civilized and educated people, but it's not being forced on you. People can decide for themselves if they want something on their body for the rest of their lives. Everyone knows the consequences of choices they make. I really wish the elderly part of the community would accept that things change, and not judge the younger part of this community based on the few that stick out in the public eye.

I would like to say "Job Well Done!" to Joyce Martin, in last week's meeting the numbers were reported by Eric Smith (head of City's Motor Pool) and Eric and Joyce, along with the City Commissioner had the vision, made a plan, and together made the City Motor Pool happen, and they were able to recoup a significant investment in a matter of months and then some! in less than approximately 14 months they have saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars and then some, plus our City Vehicle Fleet will be safer, more efficient, and last a lot longer. This is a great example of what a competent City Manager with a good City Commission can do. Garnett is only getter better and that's a great thing!

Well I sure am glad that they saved so much considering our county has cost us alot more with the jail and then the cost of running it and oh the talk about needing more money for the courthouse to be redone. By the time their done that few thousand will not even matter. And the matter of speaking or voting doesn't seem to matter in this county as they do it anyway, the new jail is a prime example of that. Really do you think a tunnel from the jail was a need for such a small community, do we have such hardened criminals around here? I think our children are in need of a new elementary school worse than a tunnel. It is sad when childrens parents great-grandparents went to that same school. Yet so many complain about the kids running around well give them something to do there is nothing around here to keep them from trouble. Instead of complaining about the problem lets try to work out a solution instead.

What would you consider a "hardened criminal". Those that tie people up at gunpoint, then take their property? Those that beat their significant others unconsious and keep them in the house by holding a knife to their throat? Those caught with mass quantities of drugs for sale? Those that rape babies (Not teens, I mean real babies)? Those that attack women in their own beds at knife point? Those that try to kill others by shooting them? Tell me, what is a "hardened criminal"?

There was an option to stop the jail. It was when the county commission formed the public building commission. There was a petition process and no one paid any attention. Just like the annual budget process for all the taxing entities; there is a budget hearing that no one ever goes to. If you are not happy with the way things are you have to participate in the process. Of course we need a school more than we need a jail. 90% of the community agrees on that and yet no one will even run against the commissioners that pushed the unwanted 5 million+ tax burden through. At what point do you cattle step up and take back control of your tax money?

In the last 10 years or so that I have lived here, the taxpayers have had to pay for the following: New high school, new fire department, new city hall, new library, new county extension office, new jail, new ballfields, and probably more I can't think of at the moment. My point is, we all want to drive new vehicles and work in brand new nice offices, but is it really a necessity at the taxpayers expense? As far as I know the population has not increased to help with the tax burden, and I have watched numerous businesses come and go. 27 that I can think of off the top of my head. Hard to stay in business when you can't afford the taxes and licenses to operate and not enough volume of people to support it. It's a shame because this is a great community but too many people are being driven away, something needs to be done and soon before everyone closes up shop and this is a ghost town. Sorry to be so gloomy on a Monday morning.:-(

Well the new high school was built 17 years ago and we certainly needed that. But I agree we could have done without the new fire station, city hall expansion, library expansion, extension offices and the jail. The ball fields I'm not sure about. I think some of those were constructed with sales tax rather than property taxes. If we needed more space for govenrment offices we sure have a lot of empty buildings around here we could have fixed up and used rather than build new ones.

I don't agree with the last person who commented. If you think that we could have delt without the extension office, you must not have known where they were before. Have you ever been in the basement of the court house? Obviously not because those offices, although sufficient in size, were in a bad location, especially during the summer months when the basement would flood. But the new ball fields? We could have delt without those. All I have ever seen those used for is the Friday night drunk...I mean co-ed league and their end of summer tournament.

What I don't understand with the new high school though. The main point that we were told for the reason behind getting the high school was that the now GEC was a hazard and needed to be torn down. If this is true, why the hell is their an elementary school there? Anyone think about that? No because everyone is too busy complaining about the new jail. I agree that we don't need the dumb tunnel, but that jail was not very good. With the rising crimes in the area we need a bigger jail, with the way the sherriff and some of his deputies are putting on weight, we need a larger jail. Next thing you know, the tax payers might be paying for a monster truck for that fat SOB>

Ashley, you don't need to make a public apology for something you didn't do. If that family is too ignorant to blame you after everything you have done for them, than that is on them. They need to get it thru their thick skulls that it more than likely isn't friends that was posting that crap, it was ignorant people. For all I know, it was probably them looking for attention, because that is what that family does. They don't care that thier brothers are in the paper all the time for going to jail and what not, they want the attention because she has changed so much that she is a saint now. Ashley, again, there is no need for an apology. I guarantee you that, even though I hope it doesn't happen, that this wedding isn't going to last. My point about the extension office was that we should have refurbished one of the existing buildings downtown at a fraction of the cost of constructing a new building. As far as the schools I seem to remeber that the group charged with facility study recommedend a new elementary school but people would not vote for that bond issue so they went to a high school project. We very much need to replace GEC as well.

I am completely appalled that there are people in this town who feel it's perfectly acceptable to steal from the sale barn lot. For many people, especially during this time of economic crisis, the money from selling a few things at the sale barn will feed their family for a week, purchase diapers for their baby or even get them important prescription medication. Please, have a little more respect and start treating others as you would like to be treated.

Why do certain "star" athletes get to leave school during a drug lockdown to avoid detection for having drugs at school and no one in the administration or on the police force questions the action. Is it fair to the rest of the students to make an exception like this, just so a "popular" student doesn't get caught?

I'm highly in favor of tattoos. I think that qualifying people should have the word "STUPID" tattooed across their forehead. It would be a walking disclaimer for anything that may come out of their mouths and make them easier to avoid.

Why is it so hard for the majority of parents in this town to understand the importance of car seat safety for children? I can't believe the number of vehicles I see, on a daily basis, that have children standing up and walking around while their parent is driving. Stop being so ignorant about it - show your children that you VALUE their safety and buckle them up. Children ages 4-8 should be in a booster seat, and younger than 4 should be in a harnessed forward facing seat.

Your right some things never change. I've only been here 15 years or so, but I know the kids haven't changed. They still prefer parties to sports or other activities. Winning and Losing doesn't really matter, but how drunk I got last weekend does. Parents ignore the problem, because the parents did the same thing when they were that age. It doesn't matter how many kids die here in alcohol/drug related accidents, law enforcement still turns a blind eye. It doesn't matter if it is the kids with the "Right" name or the kids whose parents are on state support, they all are involved. And don't respond with "if you recognize a problem, why not try to fix it". Obviously nothing does change. Way to go Garnett!!!!!

I have been here about 6 months, and I think this town should start its own Soap Opera, we could really bring in the money .We have sexual Predator's that live near schools, we have adults giving minors drugs and alcohol, we have kids running all hours of the night, we have a school district that pushes kids through school and not teaching them, we have restaurant owners attaching buildings to their property that look hideous and not complete with no building permits to do so, we have a lot of theft, we have major gossip, we have wild cats running all over, we have people judging other on their tattoos,we have no handicap access on our sidewalks, we have teacher's that do not have a teachers education, we have human eating fish, we have cops that cant follow the law or uphold the law, we have parents not disciplining their children when they do wrong,I am sure I can go on and on and I am sure those of you that have been here longer then me can add to this. What is going on? Where is the good in this town?

Friday, May 1st 2009 @ 10:16 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

The swine flu has nothing to do with pork products, it's just a name. Besides, there are 331 confirmed cases worldwide (according to CNN). Considering there are billions upon billions of people worldwide, that makes it like .000000001 % that are affected, if not much less than that.

Friday, May 1st 2009 @ 1:15 PM

There is absolutley no way that you can get the virus from eating pork. Besides this whole pandemic scare is a farce. 32,000 people die each year in the U.S. from the flu. That means statistically 614 people have dies in the last week from other flu strains while they have been talking about the one that has died from the "swine" flu. It's just something for the media blow out of proportion and Obama to spend more money on.

Rhinovirus (from the Greek rhin- which means "nose") is a genus of the Picornaviridae family of viruses. Rhinoviruses are the most common viral infective agents in humans, and a causative agent of the common cold. It is lytic in nature.

Rhinoviruses have single-stranded positive sense RNA genomes of between 7.2 and 8.5 kb in length. At the 5' end of the genome is a virus-encoded protein, and like mammalian mRNA, there is a 3' poly-A tail. Structural proteins are encoded in the 5' region of the genome and non structural at the end. This is the same for all picornaviruses. The viral particles themselves are not enveloped and are icosahedral in structure.

Rhinovirus also grows best in the temperatures between 33-35 Centigrades, and this may be the reason which the reproduction occurs in the nose. It is sensitive to acidic environment.

The viral proteins are transcribed as a single, long polypeptide, which is cleaved into the structural and nonstructural viral proteins.

I don't understand why we need a sheriff and separate city police force. In a time where taxes are sure to go up and peoples wages aren't, if they have been lucky enough to keep their jobs, it seems like overkill in a town/county this small. I don't know if either force is good or not good, but I do know that with the amount of crime reported one or the other could handle our law enforcement needs. You could cut the building needs in half, the administrative costs in half and probably not have to change officers on duty much. I think this is something that needs looked at and the city council and commissioners should have to justify to the taxpayers why both are necessary. I really don't care which one stays or goes, just paying double the taxes for the same services is WRONG at this point in our economic situation today.
Monday, May 4th 2009 @ 6:16 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

This has been discussed many times in the past. To keep the same level of service you are going to have to keep the same number of officers on staff. Maybe you reduce it by the Garnett Chief of Police. You have to keep the Sheriff position as it is an elected one and that office performs certain legally mandated functions. I am not totally against the idea other than it does concern me that when you have an elected official in charge you are at the mercy of whatever yahoo gets elected. This county has proven to me that they seldom elect the most qualified individual.
Tuesday, May 5th 2009 @ 6:23 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

I would like the Sheriff and Chief of Police to write an article for the papers letting us know how many officers are on duty at all times, how many calls they average each shift and honestly tell us why they need to stay separtate. Maybe their is data to support keeping their own departments, but I would bet that the "real" statistics would show that they could be consolidated saving us thousands of tax dollars. How can we encourage the sheriff and chief to do this is the question.
Tuesday, May 5th 2009 @ 7:16 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Most all the information you're talking about is public information (except how many people are on what shifts, etc., the crooks would love to see that in the paper). There are consulting companies that do this kind of efficiency study on a regular basis and know what to look for and evaluate and could do the job if the city and county agreed to look into it. There's the rub. They'd never do it, because someone would have to give up some "turf" and the new outfit would be less receptive to whining from parents who swear the cops are picking on their kids. You may think it would save money, and it might, but the public and the governments would never go for it.
Tuesday, May 5th 2009 @ 9:46 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Not all law enforcement officers are bad. Let's not forget that MOST of them are here to serve and protect! I see many of them arresting drunk drivers - which means LESS drunks on the road while YOU are driving your family around town!
Tuesday, May 5th 2009 @ 10:32 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

It might help those who live in the outlying areas but it would not be good for those who live in Garnett. And like the guy above said you'd have some dufus getting elected to the sheriff's position every few years with an axe to grind and wanting to change everything. You'd never have any continuity.

Most of this town is ignorant. That is apparent! Nobody was commenting on how good the police/deputies did their jobs you moron. I assume they are all there for the right reasons and then as with anything, some turn out to be good and others are not. I would like to know how much double or triple coverage we have that is not necessary and a tax burden we could do without. I think with business tightening their belt, states tightening their belts, this is a way for the city/county to help those of us non trailer renters out and tighten their belt to. I really haven't heard of many cuts by either the city or the county in personel or services!
Tuesday, May 5th 2009 @ 12:02 PM

I don't know about ignorant, but there sure seems to be a lot of people in this town that are downright hateful, and think they're head and shoulders above the next guy. Why do you refer to someone living in a trailer as trash I have seen lots of good, clean families living in trailers and their yards and "trailers" better kept than people who are in houses. Where you live should not be a way of judging someone, "judge ye not less ye be judged." It seems most of us are quick to judge others when we ourselves are hiding alot of our own faults. The world is hard enough to live in lets all try to get along as best as possible.

Here's a new topic that should generate some interest: How about all these commercials on prime time TV that are talking about erectile dysfunction, birth control, and male "enhancement." Those commercials are a little awkard when you have a teenage child sitting there watching TV with you. I'm not talking about some smutty TV channel. We were watching CSI, and here comes the boner ad. Then we have to see smiling Bob and his new found "manhood" commercials. What is the deal with TV these days? Why does everything have to centered in the genital area? Is everyone really that open and care free about sex? I don't know what channels to watch as a family anymore, because I don't like sitting there in this awkward blanket of silence while some guy is talking about his inability to achieve an erection, while some fool is singing Viva Viagra! There are also going to be big-screen t.v.'s like for Super Bowl and a stage for local performers. The name is "The Coffee Loft" and if we take advantage of someone's hard work and support it then we will all reap the benefits! We need a few more people to say "way to go" and several less putting it down. I find it very interesting that parents will defend a coach to keep a position but will not ask questions or raise heck when it comes to not filling the vocal position at the high school and jr. high level! I did not realize that baseball was so much more important than the music program that our students participate in. We used to have a great music program and it's not going to get better if we cut the amount of electives we offer! There are more students that attend college on a music or band scholarship then for sports! We need to fight and voice our opinion and get that position filled to a FULL TIME teacher!
Monday, May 11th 2009 @ 2:23 PM

I agree that we should be able to afford a full time teacher for music. What I would like to know is how many of these teacher's aide's do we have, what do they do and how much are we paying them? I suspect we could afford a music teacher if we didn't have to pay for them. We did not have any when I was in school and we had much larger classes then. We also only had a principal. We didn't need a vice principal. How many counselors do we have now? We only had one when I was in school. It just seems like all taxing entities just keep growing and need more and more people and resources to do the same job. Why is that?

In regards to Maloan's hours, I know people who have worked there and they say people come there to have a great meal and a drink or two, in a nice atmosphere. Most people do not eat dinner past 9pm and thats why they close when they do. Customers dictate the hours, obviously you're not going to stay open late when you don't get a drinking crowd. And that's probably why it has stayed a nice restaurant because it doesn't attract that late night, rowdy crowd you were describing. Not sure about Mr. D's, don't go there and don't know anywone who works there. I've seen other businesses be open what would be considered "normal" hours when they first open, then slowly they start changing them once they figure out there just isn't enough people to offset the cost of staying open. I didn't know the sidewalks rolled up around here at 8pm, but they do.

I wouldn't hold my breath on the lounge at the hotel. Unfortunately, in a town this size it is going to be difficult to have the kind of bar you are looking for. You'll have to go to the city to find anything different.

But the kicker was when the dude started up his Harley halfway through the handing out of the diplomas. A few things to ignite discussion/anger...

1. I like the new jail, the old one looked like a Mom n' Pop store.
2. The taxes in Garnett are average for a small town.
3. I am 100% in favor of a smoking ban.
4. The high school is fine, and no, kids weren't any better "in your day."
5. The Sheriff's Dept. does a wonderful job.
6. America will be just fine.

Let the onslaught begin...
Monday, May 18th 2009 @ 2:33 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

I completly agree in the smoking ban. I am pushing for it in the town I am living in now and Garnett could definantly use this, actually the entire county could use a smoking ban. Yes, smoking is the right of everyone that smokes, but it isn't the right for the non-smokers to be subject to second-hand smoke and yes, public places are subject to both. I know what some of you smokers out there that spend their time sitting on this blog, smoking a carton of cigerettes while typing back are thinking, "don't go to the bar where there is smoking" how about you guys don't go, keep your cancer to yourself. Karma is a bitch and it will come back to bite you in the ass!
Monday, May 18th 2009 @ 3:12 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

1. No, the high school isn't fine. It is over run by kids with no discipline at home, respect for others, or fear of authority.
2. Yes there were a few kids like this "in my day" but on the whole, kids did not act like they do now.
3. You're either a very nice person and just can't bear the thought of the little angels being so corrupt, or you're horribly niave to think the high school is OK. No way you'll ever convince me of that. And while you're at it, you might ask the teacher that got her shoulder dislocated by an unruly student last week if she agrees with you.
Monday, May 18th 2009 @ 3:42 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

1. I have no problem with the look of the new jail it is the $5,000,000 it cost to build and the increase in tax dollars it will take to support it.
2. Garnett taxes are too high. I pay the same annual property tax on my $130,000 house as my buddy in Lees Summit pays on his $250,000 hous.
3. I'm with you on the smoking ban.
4. The only way that you could think that high school age behavior was not better 20 or 30 years ago is if you are too young to have an informed point of view. If 1/10th of the crap that goes on now happened 30 years ago they would get their butts thrown out of school. End of story. None of this at-risk second, third, twelth chance BS.
5. I don't have a problem with the Sheriff's office. Of course, since I don't break the law I have no contact with them so I don't really know.
6. America may be just fine but it is not a foregone conclusion. We are in serious trouble economically, socially and politically. Unless we, as a county, adopt more conservative values we could very easily cease to exist.

I'm pretty old. I was in high school and college in the 60's. I remember lots of riots all over the country including right here in Garnett. I remember lots of drinking and pot smoking all over the country and right here in Garnett. I remember Woodstock and Garnett Grand Prix races around the lake. I think that most (not all, but most) of the high school students today are more responsible and better mannered than that earlier generation. We had few excuses. Our music was censored and so was TV. Today's generation is bombarded with music and programming that shows little respect for anyone and still they turn out great!
Monday, May 18th 2009 @ 9:11 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

That got some discussion going! As for the high school: yes, there are behavioral problems. But keep in mind the murderers and sex offenders running around today were products of yesterday's "better" educational institutions. Kids now just seem to get their bad behavior out of their systems a little earlier. The comment above this was fantastic. Good post.
Monday, May 18th 2009 @ 9:27 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

I too was a child of the 60's. The "riots" I assume you are refering too were mostly war and civil rights protests. Many were misguided and naive but certainly based on good motivation. I don't see a similar widespread social and political mindset with today's younger generation. The only "riot" that I am aware of happening in Garnett occurred during the races I believe around 1969. There was a large group of people drinking in the bars that were located on the south side of the square and the police became concerned that they would not be able to get them to leave by closing time so they shut the bars down early which did not sit well with the bar patrons. Things did not turn bad however until the fire department turned hoses on those that were standing in the streets. Not good judgement on the part of those in charge. I have no real problem with most of today's kids. But there is a growing percentage of them that are disrespectful. It is not their fault. It is the responsibilty of the parents to demand good behavior. Most of the problem stems from so many broken families. Well, that and the MTV.
Tuesday, May 19th 2009 @ 7:02 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT?? Yes it is. Children at High School age are capable of making decisions. The fact that they get pampered and their behavior excused away only compounds the problem. I don't agree with the people that say they are from the hippie era comparing kids today with kids from that time. Don't forget we're talking about Garnett Kansas, not LA, Kent University, or Woodstock. You can candy coat this issue all you want, but I think if you actually had to work with large groups of children every day, such as in a school or other institution, you might have a different opinion.
Tuesday, May 19th 2009 @ 9:22 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

I want to add real quickly that you do make a very good point about the breakdown of the family and MTV, but you don't have to stop with television. What about all these video games that make law breaking into heroism? What about all this internet crap like myspace and facebook? And then cell phones? They are so dependant on electronics for their entertainment they've forgotten how to interact appropriately with real people, I fear. Now THAT may be the parents' fault for providing their kids will all that crap. And that's just what it is . . . .CRAP.
Tuesday, May 19th 2009 @ 9:26 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

I'm sick of hearing the damn Grand Theft Auto/video game argument. What people don't understand is that violent crime rates in this country have been going DOWN steadily since the 90's. I'll bet you don't believe that. Go to www.fbi.gov and look at their national crime statistics. People run around screaming that the sky is falling because of R movies and guns in video games and don't realize that America is safer than it was 30 years ago. The difference is that now, thanks to the media, we're constantly encapsulated in discussion of the dangers that DO exist to the point that we're constantly fearful, and convinced that the country is going to hell in a handbasket.

2) "Argument" in this case was used to refer to a reasoned opinion, not a conflict between two sides.
3) Nowhere in my post was there a reference to any belief of MINE that the fabric of American society is tearing; rather, it was a criticism of those who seem to hold this belief.

In the future, my fellow American, you should probably make certain you understand a post before attempting to mock the person behind it.

You don't have to be retarded to get into special ed anymore. Laziness and attitude will get you right in on the gravy train. You just have to know how to work the system I guess.

It is not only the lazy ones who will struggle it is also the company that employs him and the fifty just like him. We have an aging workforce and there are not enough new people to take the place of the baby boomers who are retiring. That means hiring people that you ordinarily would not even consider.
Wednesday, May 20th 2009 @ 9:41 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

So you're implying that young people now are generally lazy, poor workers? In my experience the youth in this country are similar to any other age group: a hand full of winners, a whole lot of losers (and yes, I stole that line from George Carlin). I think folks who are convinced that young people today can't handle things the way their generation could are glorifying the past to an alarming extent.
Wednesday, May 20th 2009 @ 9:52 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

What I am saying is that the baby boomers are retiring at an increasing rate and there are not enough good people to replace them so as an employer you have to look at people you'd rather not. I don't know if the percentage of losers is any higher than it used to be its just that more workers are leaving the workforce than coming into it. So you eaither lower your standards or leave positiions unfilled.

Call me pessimistic, but I see these kids walking around the work place, disengaged, iPod headphones on and turned up, texting their friends when they're supposed to be working, slovenly appearance, showing up late, etc. etc. Yes it is true that not ALL the youngsters in the workplace are like this. Some are real go-getters, but those are few and far between, and probably the ones that either mommy and daddy couldn't afford all the electronic gadgetry, or had enough common sense to yank the wires and put the kid behind a pushmower over the summer.
It's a very real concern. I'm sorry so many chose to look the other way. That doesn't help these kids one bit. It just enables them to perpetuate the behaviors and attitudes.
Wednesday, May 20th 2009 @ 11:20 AM

Those kids' counterparts in your generation, whichever generation it may be, were equally as disengaged. The difference is they didn't have the gadgets to advertise the appearance of their disinterest, nor did they have a media inundating society with implict messages convincing the populace that society is crumbling at its foundation.
Kids, by and large, have always had a lack of motivation and drive. Even in the animal kingdom, you won't see a juvenile looking alert and serious. It's nature. I think the difference is that prior generations put a lot of emphasis on the appearance of propriety. These days people seem to care less of what people think of them, hence kids' manner of dress, distracting gadgets, etc. Yesterday's kids weren't any sloppier mentally, they just weren't allowed to show it.

You know, since this country seems to be having such a hard time in this economy, why not shut down all of these shows hat give out thousands upoin thousands on dollars away to contestents. For example, Deal or No Deal, Jeprady, Wheel of Fortune, Survivor, Amazing Race. If we cancelled these shows and put that money into the economy, who knows what would happen. Something to think about people. THe more reality shows that come along, the worse it might get because that money is going to people who may deserve it because of the game, but we deserve it more for our economy.
Tuesday, May 26th 2009 @ 9:02 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

And how do you propose to "put that money into the economy"? I am no big fan of the shows you mention but to take them off of the air would remove far more money from the economy than you propose to put into it. Television shows are made by production companies that employee many people. The networks place the shows on the air and sell ad space to companies to market their products. Because of the advertising people buy stuff. This is the economy, that's how it works. As inane as useless as these shows are they are part of the economy. We need to get away from this idea that the government is going to fix the economy. The only thing that will work and has ever worked is for us to place our faith in the free enterprise system. I for one don't want the damn government poking around in every aspect of my life. Let them build roads and schools and protect our borders and stay the hell out of the way of everything else.

The post about shutting down reality shows makes no sense. The contenstants who win the money on these shows spend it, thus putting it back into the economy. It's not like the money just disappears after it's won. And for the record, the amount of money given to Jeopardy contenstants is paltry in comparison to what it would take to have a meaningful effect on the economy. If you don't like the shows, just say that instead of insinuating that they're hurting the country financially.

It is forntunate for you that you mother did not feel the same way you do. You say the prolife camp does not murder but every abotion proves you wrong. How old does a child have to be before you become concerned? Is it ok to kill a two year old but you draw the line at nine?
Monday, June 1st 2009 @ 9:52 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Ronald Reagan said it the best: "Those who are against abortion, have already been born." Life starts at conception, there is no need for the killing of innocent babies. There are plent of other services out there to help with unwanted pregnancies. I was adopted because my birth mother was only 16 years old. I am sitting here righting this today because she made the choice to give me up for adoption instead of aborting me. Yes people who have their child that give them up for adoption can get depressed, but women who have abortions, are 90% more likely to be depressed, maybe not within the first couple years but after a while because most people know what they did wrong.

As for the list of top ten from up above, how about if you want to do research you find something newer than 2000, it's freaking 2009, catch up.

Keep trying to justify breaking the law and murder on the holy ground of a church if you want- that's what religious psychopaths have always done. A fetus in my body is still MY body, and I not you will determine my life regardless of your facist justifications. I love it when the so-called church going religious people preach love, but then justify murder. Kind of like the whole "God loves me unconditionally, but will damn me to hell if I don't please him and live the way he wants." Sounds like my first marriage. No thanks. Actually it is not a simple biological fact that life begins at conception. If life can't survive outside a host, then there is evidence that it only survives due to subsistence on that host. Cancer is also living tissue, yet we support surgeries to remove cancer. An unwanted fetus is more akin to a parasite until its host determines it has value. That may be distasteful to some, but it is a blend of scientific and philosophic fact.

I can tell by some of the rantings on here that someone is very Catholic. The Catholic church is run by MEN who hide their sexuality (sometimes) behind their pretty white robes. None of them have ever had the experience of a child growing within their bodies. None of them know the true anquish of having a baby inside of them that they really did not want. None of them have had to grapple with the decision to terminate a pregnancy, give the baby up for adoption, or go through the pains of childbirth to bring a child into this world. Instead, they sit in their golden palace with their penis tucked between their own legs and they judge and condemn. They are not forgiving like Jesus. They are drunk with power and blind with sexism. Sinners judging sinners. Isn't that great?
A husband, father, grandfather and friend was gunned down in the lobby of a church. It looks to me like these Catholics are getting off on it. What the hell is wrong with people?

The concept that another individual or group of individuals can ordain what a woman can do with her body (to give birth or not give birth) is in conflict with the basic premise of human rights. One can argue the morality of abortion, but one can always argue morality (hence Dr. Tiller "getting what he had coming" above). You cannot presume to support human rights yet legislate against a woman's basic and sovereign right to end her own pregnancy should she deem to do so. Nor can you deny a person the right to Dr.-assisted suicide. You may tell people you believe those are morally wrong and abhorrent, but you cannot logically claim to support sovereign rights, then deny them.

No- but a fetus is not a human being- it is unable to survive outside its host until a certain point in the pregnancy. Life begins when it can sustain itself either by its own means or by the volition of another. It does not begin at conception, any more than the dying tissue cells from the fetus days after fertilization demonstrates that death begins at conception.

Life begins at conception and there are all sorts of things that can make that life ceae at any point while it is alive. Abortion, small pox, gunshot, heat failure, cancer. Many things can kill a human. Abortion is just one of the many ways.

To all you pro-abortioners who claim you're pro-choice. The choice is simple spread your legs or keep them closed. Thats the CHOICE. After that it's a human life and the sanctity of human life is simple. Abortion is MURDER! Pro-abortioners try to hide behind the word "choice". They just mistake when the "choice" actually takes place.Catholic or Protestant doesn't matter. Wrong is wrong. I agree women need control of their body, so control by not getting pregnant in the first place. And don't use the rape or incest argument, a life is a life whether it was conceived in backseat or a bedroom.

When does life begin? This question has taken on major proportions of debate and controversy, between supporters of Pro-life and groups of Pro-choice. To most, the answer is distinctly clear about when life begins. It begins at conception, when the sperm fertilizes the egg.

Dr. Landrum Shettles, sometimes called the "Father of in vitro fertilization" notes about life's beginnings: "Conception confers life and makes that life one of a kind." Continuing on his comments about the Supreme Court ruling on Roe vs. Wade he says, "To deny a truth (about when life begins) should not be made a basis for legalizing abortion."

Dr. Albert Liley, the renowned physiologist known as the "Father of Fetology" has stated, "Biologically, at no stage of development can we subscribe to the view that the unborn child is a mere appendage of the mother. Genetically, the mother and baby are separate individuals from conception."

The baby is autonomous of the mother and has been demonstrated successfully since the introduction of test tube babies. The ovum or the egg is fertilized with the sperm inside a laboratory facility. The zygote, a fertilized egg, begins to divide and grow looking like a bag of marbles even though it may be countries away from the mother.

This halts the viewpoint that the fertilized egg (or pregnancy tissue, as Planned Parenthood calls it) is an appendage of the mother. If any other part of the mother's anatomy is removed, such as an appendix, it will not continue to live. But the fertilized egg has shown its autonomy in survival outside the mother's body, and has further shown its autonomy implanted into another woman. The fertilized egg does not take on the surrogate mother's characteristics, but develops according to its own DNA make up.

Within four days of fertilization, the sex of the zygote can be determined through microscopic techniques. Soon after one week of fertilization, the zygote contains the beginning of all major body structures. Fet

Back to Dr. Tiller... he was shot by the same sort of religious extremist as those that are killing others in Pakistan and Afghanistan. They cannot get a majority to see things their way and change the law so they begin killing those they disagree with.

You folks have been arguing two differnt issues here today. First and foremost there is no place for vigilante justice in the U.S. No one has the right to gun anyone else down. The second issue on abortion is much more difficult and there is no easy answer. I, like the majority of Americans, believe that life begins at conception. I don't beleive in abortion but I fully understand why many women consider that option. I don't think it is in the childs best interest to be raised in a one parent home or in a home where they are not wanted. There are many people out there who can't have children and would be very happy to adopt. I also don't think it is in a young woman's best interest to be saddle with a child at the expense of her future if she is not prepared or unable to assume the responsibility. Again, adoption is the best option. Birth control is too effective now days for there to be that many unwanted pregnancies. And yes there is nothing wrong with keeping you legs crossed when you are on a date. However, this issue is not going to be resolved here so you are just going to have to agree to disagree and move on.

If you think you know who I am then just say it, I'm not scared to have people know what I really feel. As for bashing the Catholics, where the hell did this come from? Just because I told Dale he needs a Priest?

To the guy that bashed our priest on the funeral dinner, you know most of the time, well probably 99% of the time, the family always invites the priest to go first or somewhere up front, so maybe you should keep your damn mouth shut about that. I can't believe that I used to live in a place where there is so much hatred and where the entire senior class could go out, get pregnant, and then ALL of them go and get abortions. That is what it seems like most everyone is saying on here. But I bet the first person that gets shot in Garnett goes to jail forever, expecially since ole Fred isn't the attorney anymore and they can't get off. Most women hide their abortions because they are ashamed of what they did.

By the way, the Catholic church has one and only one exception to abortions and that is when a women is pregnant and has to go thru chemo, then and only then after the permission from the priest is it ok, because it is a medical fact that the chemo can cause problems for the fetus. Why else is their any other reasons to have an abortion.

You people need to get a ligfe, and if you think you know who I am, then pleae, please tell me, put my initials on here and I can get it, I;m not dumb. I bet I know who you are too. Because of the way you put that I preach on thing but do another. Let me guess, Karma?

There is not a good answer for how much authority we should give the government. I am strongly against abortion but I think we are better served by using educational and societal pressures to stop the practice rahter than hand that authority over to the government. We have given them too much power as it is. That is a great part of the probelm. We have created generations of Americans who do not accept responsibility for their actions. Much of this mindset stems from the misconception that the government exists to take care of us.

George Tiller wasn't just doing abortions; his clinics were 2 of 3 in the United States that performed late term abortions when the infants were viable outside of the womb. Therefore the infants had to be killed before being delivered. I'm against all abortions as are Mormons, Southern Baptists, many other denominations and many non-affiliated people as well as Catholics. I am really against the hypocrisy that says it is okay to pay George Tiller or someone else to destroy a viable life, but it is not okay for a frightened unwed mother to abandon her newborn child or throw it in a dumpster. George Tiller has taken thousands of lives. His killer took one.

Wow, I have not been on this blog for several days and Wow, you people had a lot to talk about! I think we all can agree that we ALL have the right to believe what we want to believe. That doesn't mean it is right. Or wrong. The LAW is what we MUST ABIDE BY even if we DISAGREE. Hell, congress can't even agree on which laws should be passed! Then if one administration actually does, the next one turns around and reverses it! There has to be a better way people, I don't know what it is, but there has to be one.

And about the religous arguments, it is my understanding that if you truly repent for your sins and ask Jesus Christ to be your Saviour, you will receive Gods forgiveness and have everlasting life. I have never heard of a timeframe that you had to do this by, you could be on your death bed when you finally repent and accept Christ. You could have been a mean, hateful, nasty, vendictive person your entire life, or a liar, or a petty thief, or an adulterer, or a Dr. who performed abortions (legally), or a woman who had an abortion (legally), or someone who made a conscious decision to drive drunk and killed innocent lives, or yes even a cold blooded murderer, BUT if you truly repent and accept, you will be forgiven. That is my understanding, I'm not saying that I agree with it. We are ALL SINNERS. Judge not lest thou be jugded?

"I am personally opposed to killing abortionists. However, inasmuch as my personal opposition to this practice is rooted in a sectarian (Catholic) religious belief in the sanctity of human life, I am unwilling to impose it on others who may, as a matter of conscience, take a different view. Of course, I am entirely in favor of policies aimed at removing the root causes of violence against abortionists. Indeed, I would go so far as to support mandatory one-week waiting periods, and even nonjudgmental counseling, for people who are contemplating the choice of killing an abortionist. I believe in policies that reduce the urgent need some people feel to kill abortionists while, at the same time, respecting the rights of conscience of my fellow citizens who believe that the killing of abortionists is sometimes a tragic necessity--not a good, but a lesser evil. In short, I am moderately pro-choice."

I think parents in this town should start being concerned about the people running this school district. 1) The elementary schools are not buildings most of us would want our kids in. Look around at other schools in our league and you realize how bad and dangerous they are. We have the WORST facilities in our little league. 2) the asst. principal at the High School is unqualified for the position and does nothing but draw a check. How do you have a person in an administrative position who has NO classroom experience. Give us a break, a counselor is NOT a real teacher and has no idea what teachers have to deal with. 3) the principal is a figurehead who's only real concern is Student Council. While he is a nice person, he is NOT the educational leader you need leading your middle and High Schools. 4) The middle school and high school LOST the only discipline in the building when the asst. principal/AD left. With the 2 people's credentials that run the building I don't have much faith in their hiring of a replacement. They better get a person who is strong on discipline and a former head varsity coach who understands what coaches need.

The grace period for the Superintendent is over also. It is time to start working on building a new DISTRICT elementary/Junior High and get the middle school away from the high school and get all of our kids in nice, modern buildings. If people can find a way to get a new jail without a vote, then there should be a way to get a new school the same way. People in Garnett better wake up and start demanding the School board do their job and get our schools on the right track!

I agree that we need new schools but there is no way that we can pay for them now. Remember that we are in the midst of the worst economy since the 1930s. Once the high school bonds are paid off then it might be feasible. I also believe that it might be time to revisit the further consolidation of the smaller schools. It also would have made things simpler if we didn't have a fancy new jail to pay for.

I attended school at Irving & at GEC and I turned out ok. While new facilities would be nice, I am more concerned with getting teachers that are excited about teaching and working with the kids. Seems to me that some teachers just put in their time instead of really reaching out and teaching the kids. That isn't just a problem at the high school. Teachers, I hope you realize what an impact you make on young lives. You make a direct impact good or bad. Let's get the passion back to teach. School leaders/administration let's start rewarding the teachers that go above what is expected and start requiring more of all teachers and help them get excited again about teaching.

I agree that what goes on inside a school is more important that the building itself but the buildings we have need to be replaced. We certainly can't do it right now with the economy as bad as what it is but we should take a look at it as soon as the bonds for the high school are retired. I'm not certain when that will be but I know it was built in 1992 and I think the bonds were on a 20 year maturation schedule so that would be 2012. I know if I were a person with a young family thinking about relocating to the region I would certainly look at the school facilities before making my decision. As far as the teachers we have I don't have an informed opinion because my children have been out of school for many years. I suspect that the quality of educators is about the same as you will find in any other town in the area. I suspect that a group of concerned citizens will have to start pushing for a new school the same way they did in the early 90's before anything will happen. My belief is that it is time to shut down some or all of the outlying small community schools to make it cost effective. However if you do that then you can bet those communites will vote down any new construction project. Consequently I would not look for anything to happen for a good long while. We are not noted for our longterm thinking around here.

All I am saying is that it took three failed bond issues and twenty years before we were able to pass the bonds to build the new high school. At that time it was the recommendation of those charged with looking at the district’s facilities that new elementary schools were the biggest need but they (correctly) felt that for a bond issue to pass it had to be for a high school. The need for new elementary schools is still as dire but so is the possibility of getting the support to build any. I'm not trying to be pessimistic. I've just fought this same battle too many times.

By night he swims the murky waters of the north lake waiting for his next victim to stumble into the lake in a drunken stupor or worse yet, dare to take a skinny dip. He can be spotted on a regular basis down at Trade Winds, drinking long necks and swapping jokes with a guy that has a really obnoxious laugh. Beware.

I don't mind paying taxes. It is part of my responsibility as a citizen. However, I object very strongly to the misuse of that money. The new jail being the most recent lunacy. Taxpayers must always watch where their money goes and object when it is wasted. Government on all levels has always wanted to get bigger. A local example is our county emergency management office. Just a few years ago you had a local preacher acting in that role part time. When he retired they hired someone full time and got him a full time deputy, both with county vehicles. I seem to recall they were lobbying for the purchase of some kind of mobile coomand vehicle as well but I don't remember if they got that. That's the kind of thing that we have to guard against. I'm not saying there was malicious intent in any of these actions, it is just the nature of government to always want to grow bigger. Our money is better spent elsewhere.

Why did the city administrator spend tens of thousands of dollars to hire a consultant to examine the fire department, then ignore all of his recommendations? Not only ignore his recomendations, but adopt a strategy that was specifically warned against. We need a little communication from the city leaders here.

All we had to do was get the limbs to the side of the street, and they were picked up and hauled off. Not only that, but the workers were polite and considerate, even coming into the yard at our request to get the larger limbs that we could not lift. A special thanks to the crew that helped us out. Somebody tries to make something light hearted of all this bullcrap on here, and they're labeled uneducated white trash. The only entertainment on here is to see comments that are derrogatory and cruel. That shows the kind of audience this pathetic blog draws. I check in on this site from time to time, and I'm never disappointed in the true crap that on here. If you all think you're such political experts, and would make such great city managers, why on earth do you anonymously blog on some rinky-dink website as opposed to pushing your fat butts away from your keyboards and actually get out and do something constructive about it, like run for office yourself, or at least show up for some meetings and voice your opinions? Wait - I think I just answered my own question. Nevermind.

Unless you 20 and 30 somethings want to really work at it, you'd better get used to your kids going to school in crappy old buildings in USD 365. There's only one way to get a new elementary school, and that's to win an election. The only way you can do that is to REALLY work at getting people your age out to vote- first to register- then to vote. That's how Obama won the election, afterall. Numbers count, and each of you has to take it upon yourself to generate numbers of voters. Otherwise wait until those buildings are too expensive to keep open or simply are declared unsafe- then its mobile units. If you want an investment in your community, you're going to have to make it.

I find it amazing that those people who use this blog to perpetuate the stereotype of the aimless dullard of the MTV generation take exception to those of us who would like to discuss pertinent local issues relating to government policies and the need for new school facilities. Do we think that we are going to solve any problems here? No, of course not. Should concerns be addressed directly to the various governing boards? Yes, of course they should. But that does not mean it is not appropriate and desirable for concerned citizens to participate in a dialogue on the issues. Believe me the powers that be monitor this site and it is a good way for them to gain an appreciation for what the voting public thinks. The inane babbling about “chugs” is sure to impress them don’t you think? Personally, I wish Dane would break this blog into two sections; one for the kids who want to play and one for adults wishing to discuss local topics.

I guess you could call yourself a cultural terroist.

Music is life long...sports is fleeting. We need to support academics and Arts. Those are the things that LAST ! Band kids pay for all their own equipment. Do the sports teams ? I know this is primarily a blog for local issues but I think it is important that we recognize a couple of things that are going on at the federal level that if passed by congress are going to raise your tax burden significantly.
First is the new "cap and trade" energy tax. It is designed to increase the cost of energy so the administration can promote their "green" energy programs. The second is the national health insurance program. Current debate on how to fund the program includes taxing your employer health benefits as part of your compensation. However, if you are a member of a union it would remain untaxed. And if anyone wants to see how a government run health program would operate just look at the VA. Everyone needs to contact their congressmen and senators very quickly and let them know that we don't want to turn the U.S. into France. You want to know want the federal economy is going to look like? Look at California. That's the model we are following.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 6:30 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

1. The cap and trade energy tax is also going to generate millions in tax revenue collected from companies currently making our air less safe to breathe and water less safe to drink. This revenue will be used to cut the taxes of the middle class. I don't support the measure, but let's be accurate in our descriptions.

2. The health insurance program is NOT socialized medicine, so it would not "turn the US into France." You mention one potential method of funding the program and throw together a few inept analogies, but said absolutely nothing about what the plan might entail. Thanks for the info.

Let me guess, you watch a lot of Fox News, right?
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 10:33 AM

Posted by Dale:

Dear above poster, I would really like to see your math. There is no way with the massive spending plans the Democrats are ramrodding through congress that ANYONE will see any tax relief, not to mention the impact on consumer prices after higher taxes on those industries. Add on a national health insurance system and it gets even worse. Somewhere, somebody has to pay for Christmas.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 10:39 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Dear above poster, I didn't see a whole lot of math in your post, either. The problem with Democrats' spending is that it is deficit spending; that is, they're NOT raising taxes to keep up with their spending. By the end of this calendar year, I anticipate seeing tax cuts for most Americans. I also expect to see the deficit at an ungodly amount. I'm not a Democrat and I don't necessarily support these measures, but I would like to see them discussed intelligently, rather than haphazard references to France being substituted for informed discourse.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 10:53 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Yes cap and trade will generate a lot of money from companies who will pass that cost along to the consumer. That means you and I will foot the bill. IF there is a tax cut it will not be enough to offset the increased cost of energy. They want to drive the cost of energy up so you will use less and with the hope it becomes cost effective to promote the so called "green" technologies. We should be building nuclear plants and drilling in Alaska if we want clean electricity and less dependence on foreign oil.
On the health insurance front nobody in the country knows what will finally shake out. All I know is that I can't think of one program that the government runs in an efficient manner. Whatever they do I hope it is run by a company truing to make a buck because free enterprise is the only way to control spending.

On the subject of health care, I have yet to hear a good solution. Obama's plan is too expensive and inefficient, but at the same time our health care system is a joke. Health insurance companies are more focused on screwing us over than providing the intended services, doctors order unnecessary, expensive tests just to prevent frivolous lawsuits, and it all costs the average American more than they can afford. Something needs to be done, but good ideas are scarce.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 11:39 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Health insurance companies are trying to do what all companies try to do - earn a profit. They should not be allowed to direct patient care. Doctors should be the ones determining the appropriate course of treatment. But doctors should also be allowed to work without the threat of being sued every time they turn around.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 12:59 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

I would dispiute the fact that our health care system is a joke. More medical advances have come out of our system in the last 50 years than any other place on earth. The plain fact is, we don't have a health CARE crisis, we have a health INSURANCE crisis. The best solution would be for the politicians leave it to the market, and butt out entirely.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 1:45 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

Right now we basically DO leave it to the market, and health insurance is a travesty as a result. Can you cite your source on more medical advances coming from here than anywhere else on earth? Or are you just assuming that's true? China and Japan are performing effective surgeries on serious conditions that aren't even legally allowed to be performed here yet. We're falling behind.
Thursday, June 25th 2009 @ 1:57 PM

Posted by Anonymous:

Most peopel I talk to are pretty satisfied with their health insurance. I think the recent trend towards HSA and HRA programs are a really good idea. I do think that the government might help by getting some kind of arrangement with the insurance carriers where people could obtain coverage without having to go through an employer based group. That is what hurts the small companies when you have one or two people in the group that has a major illness all the rest of them have to pay huge rates. If it was the same rate for everyone in the country it would be much better. The employers could still participate with the premiums if they wanted to.

Doctors should be getting sued more often, not less. I get all warm and giddy when I hear of a Doctor getting smacked with a lawsuit. Lawsuits translate into a decent system of quality control--and for what I am paying--quality should be held to the highest standard out there. Lawyers are not the villians; quit blaming high medical costs on lawyers, and focus on the actual industry that commands such fees--all of which center around the AMA.

Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 9:25 AM

Here is another tax money waster by our boys in blue. Most counties require their deputies to live in the county and they get to take home the patrol car so that if there is an emergency they can go straight to the scene. I'm not sure how often an "emergency" happens, but the reasoning is sound. However, in anderson county we have at least 2 deputies that live out of county and still take the vehicles home at our expense. How can that be justified. One of those lives in W...burg and has a rep for playing the girls, dispatchers, etc. while he is married/live in whatever. Why we keep him on the force AND allow him to take a truck home at OUR expense is beyond me. Some of you will come back at me and say to bring it up to the commissioners, sheriff, etc. that is foolish knowing from that point on you will be a marked person. How many thousands of dollars of tax money does this guy and the Paola guy cost us every year? Somebody needs to ask and move to get rid of these guys? Or at least make them have to drive to work and pay for their gas like the rest of us taxpayers do!
Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 9:36 AM

Posted by Dale:

I disagree. I think cops should be encouraged to drive their official vehicle for personal stuff even when they're off duty- makes for the perception of a broader law enforcement presence in the community, seeing those cars around more often. Yes, there's a lot of anger at the cops around here and I can say they've always been utmost professional when I've had dealings with them. Part of the problem the scumbags that deal with them the most (and I wonder why) always think they''re being picked on and they're the ones whining about it. My opinion- if you're crying about the cops or slamming them, you're probably more a threat to the community than they are.
Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 9:44 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

I agree that is it is good for them to drive them in OUR community. I could careless what "broader law enforcement presence" our tax dollars bring to W...burg or Paola. You missed the whole point. Next time read and try to comprehend the jist of the article before you respond so quickly. Also, I am no threat to the community and have legitimate concerns about some of the adulterers that we have on the sheriffs force, that we pay his salary!
Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 9:56 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

I totally agree with you. I've never been in trouble with the law anywhere in my life, yet I share your concern about local law enforcement. I have worked in the field before, and I saw first hand abuse of authority, corruption, and immorality at all levels of the force I worked for. As a civilian now, it scares me. We have people toting badges and guns that simply want to feel important and powerful. They're not all like that, but it only takes one or two on a small force to really cast a bad shadow on the entire department. And whoever this Romeo is you guys are talking about - he'll get caught. He'll get too cocky, and he'll leave a loop hole to get himself caught up in.
Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 10:18 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Agreed. I don't believe they are all bad or they are all screwing around, but like you said all it takes is a one to make them all look bad. They ought to re-investigate the w.burg guy and see what they can dig up. Not living in the county he can take our tax money, vehicle, etc . and really have no one to answer to for his transgressions.

I have to admit the driving county vehicles out of county home does put hack me off. I have to buy gas to get back and forth to work why doesn't he? It's his choice to not live in anderson county not the tax payers!

Posted by Are you kidding?:

OK, I am going to comment on this one. I can only assume that it is one of the other officers that is bitching about the "W" officer, because there is no one in the community that he could have pissed off to that extreme. What the poster is not telling you is that this officer is one of the few decent officers of the department. Being so, he along with the other, maybe two other decent officers, gets the short end on most things when it comes to perks or even recognition for a job well done. Now, with your semi-new administration (Brownrigg), he has hired officers that do no more than drive around in their car with a uniform on. They are no more than a warm body in a uniform. I would name names, but I fear that this entire post might be deleted if I do, so I will use initials. M.M. is an excellent officer, and treats people right. M.S. knows the job, but due to low morale, in my opinion, has slacked off on his duties somewhat. S.C. is by far one of the best officers, and makes good arrests and writes good reports. V. V. does a good job investigating reports. The rest of the department are not worth even a mention. That includes the top two. The only other one that deserves mentioning is the one that is referred to as being from Paola. The only mention that he deserves is the fact that he could not be hired at ANY other department...he can not make a good arrest, but will arrest people anyway, just to make it appear that he is doing a good job. Too numerous to count the people's rights that he has violated. His name is S.D. If you feel the need to bitch about an officer, maybe check in to some facts that pertain to law enforcement, like are arrests that are being made LEGAL? Is the officer "stretching the truth" in his reports to justify his illegal arrests? You will not find this with the officers that were mentioned, with the exception of the last one. My guess is that there are one or maybe two of the city officers and some of the newer county officers that bitch

and it is due to the fact that this "W" officer does his job and does it well, which intimidates the others. He does not violate people's rights in doing his job. I would rather pay for the whole department to drive from another county than to pay for one that is there strictly for his own ego, as most of them on both departments are. I too would sign my name but I have lived in this community for a long time and have family that have never had dealings with law enforcement and I fear that may change by signing my name. Someone does need to step up and reign in some of the city and county officers but these bloggers are pointing the finger at the wrong officer. If it is the other officers, as is my suspicion, it is probably more to draw attention away from them...

Tuesday, June 30th 2009 @ 10:24 AM

To the poster of the above...YOU are a fricking idiot. WHO are you to suggest that an officer be "re-investigated" to "see what can be drug up"? How do you even know if there was a first investigation to "re" investigate? I wish I knew who the F you are so I could request that people "dig into your personal life to see what they can dig up." You are a moron. I bet you are pure as the driven snow huh? What an arrogant ass you are.

YOU, Mr. Dumb As*, show your brilliance. Since you have all the answers and are working on figures of mileage for the commissioners (I assume from your post) why don't you now start doing some mathematics on how long it will take and how much more in taxes you can pay when the county is sued by the officers that you are not complaining about? Try to figure a little equation there, would you? And you sound like a whiney bitch that believes everything that is spoon fed to them. Here you probably have a buddy who knows a cop that works in another state, that heard that a nephew of his girlfriend's heard from her hairdresser that there was an officer messing around with someone on some department in some state, possibly Kansas. Good for you to throw that out there for everyone to feed on. GEEZ...hillbilly banjo music and inbreeding is all that even comes to mind on this one.

Until then shut up you whiney little bitch ass punk!

Besides, what do people in small towns expect for $12-$16/hour. Obviously most officers that can go somewhere after training do and make a lot more money. SO that leaves us with those that are from here and have no desire to leave, those fired from other places or those not good enough to go other places for better money. I think that sums up where we are at. You go to Johnson County and the salary is doubled and so is the education and expectations for the officers. We take what we can get. It will never change. So kiss up, don't get in trouble and unless the deputy crosses over into your personal life you won't even know they are there. And if he does get in your personal life then be careful how you handle it or in a small town YOU will be a marked person and he will go totally free.

One thing I have noticed in reading this blog is the topic always seems to swing back to county law enforcement. The posters must be disgruntled employees or former employees or people who get in trouble with the law. Those of us who are law abiding citizens don't have any idea even how many officers are on the force let alone who they are and who they are sleeping with.

I think it is high time that the local and state governments cut all of the expensive programs such as WIC, utility bill assistance, extended unemployment benefits, etc...that breed lazy nonworking people who suck up all our tax dollars. Must be some pretty good benefits in Garnett since the town seems to be filling up with these types.

After reading some of the posts above, I certainly hope they were not made by current local law enforcement officers, although given all the particulars cited, I'd be inclined to believe they are. The lack of control over emotions as expressed through the profanity and name calling here suggests a lack of maturity, and probably emotional stability. God help us if the bloggers doing this are actually packing badges and guns. Holy smoke!

Above poster - great idea! Take a time when the economy is in decline and honest people are losing their jobs, and cut government benefits! Here are few wonderful outcomes from your proposal:

1. Garnett can develop a panhandling problem...just like the big cities have!

2. The crime rate will double. Roulette is fun...let's see whose house gets robbed tonight!

3. Local businesses will cease to exist. Financial assistance allows the poor to put money into the economy, but sure, let's get rid of it and ruin some small business owners!

*clap* *clap* Great idea! *clap* *clap* *clap*

There is no doubt sometimes a valid need for government, state and local assistance programs. However, the lack of regulation and limits on these programs has spawned freeloading lifers. There are plenty of jobs out there that pay enough for people to survive, the problem is that these people either think they are to good for them or they make more by sitting at home drawing a monthly unemployment/welfare checks. The government has allowed this emergency security so to speak to become a life long vacation for undeserving people at taxpayers expense.
Wednesday, July 1st 2009 @ 9:02 AM

Posted by Anonymous:

Would you trade places with a person on welfare? If your answer is yes, you obviously have no idea how little people really get through these programs. First, financial assistance is not given out as readily as people believe it is, and second, it is never enough to live comfortably. I agree that it's frustrating to see anyone getting taxpayer money when they don't do anything, but trust me, they are not getting more money from aid than they would from a full-time job.

To the person that recommends cutting extended unemployment benefits . . . have you checked lately to see what the unemployment rate actually is right now? Have you tried to land a decent job lately - one that can support a family? Have you even checked to see how many job opportunities actually exist out there? You think that extended unemployement benefits will breed lazy, non-working people? Let's say we do things your way. Not only was the other blogger correct about increased crime and probably pan-handling, but what about those people that do not chose crime to solve their problems. We'll see more Chapter 7 Bankruptcies which will leave more unpaid bills that can't be collected, more homes go into foreclosure, more vehicles be repossessed, more credit card companies and banks failing, hospitals having to charge more because of bad debts, insurance premiums increasing, uh . . . I'm sure there's more.
Don't look for people to start laying their pens on YOUR table, Mr. Nash. Wow.

To the anonymous "strawberry_rose" and the poster from "Are you kidding" Your posts seem to be very insider information. Do you work for the law enforcement? Just an average citizen would not have that much detail. However, it is widely known that police officers make less than your average McDonald's manager. The officers bust their butts to keep town safe and all you do is complain about it. Does one of the officer's make more money than you? Is that why you are so upset? What is your exact problem with the SD officer? That seems to be the one you have the most anger towards....What did he do to you? Take your mom to jail for meth or somethin'? The way I see it, the officers just caught a killer and saved lives from a crazy person not running around. I've seen the one you say is from Paola driving his own personal car in and out of town. I see him in a patrol car in town. Therefore, I would assume he doesn't take a vehicle home. So why again are you so angry? Prozac can do wonders for angry people you know.

Some of the bloggers above have got to be either cops, or cops' family members, given the knowledge of details, as well as the level of anger in the responses. I wish people would quit bashing cops on here for one real simple reason:
As angry as some of these individuals sound on here, and the fact that everyone on here is anonymous, I personally do not want some hot headed resentful cop walking up to my car window because I ran a stop sign and have them yank me out through the window and beat me half to death. Please watch what you're saying on here. Like it or not, the cops and deputies in this town and county hold the badges and the guns, and they do have authority over us. They can arrest us for jaywalking if they want to.

I agree. Cops are only people. They have emotions, issues, and limits on what they can and will take. Stop tormenting them on here before some innocent citizen has to suffer for it. Somebody want to explain why we give super feminine county appraiser a raise and the rest of the county employees go without. Anybody who knows, knows that his staff does the work and he runs around looking busy, thinking of ideas for his next flamer play. That guy has played the county long enough. They could let him go, bring in somebody else and save thousands every year. When will the commissioners act for the people. Old, white and stupid is no way to go through the rest of their lives. But the county appraiser's raise show that 2 of the 3 are living the dream! The appraiser showed how little class he has when he threw the county engineer under the bus when he revealed, that she is $6800 over her midrange. What a lowlife! Now we're stuck for another 4 years. Thanks again commissioners. How can the appraiser with no college degree be paid higher than the sheriff with a college degree. It's a joke!:(

I think our appraiser does a good job and who cares if he has a degree or not. It is what you know that counts not how you obtained the knowledge (and before you bash me I do have a degree). Because of the contractual nature of his job he only gets the opportunity to get a raise every four years and he was turned down for one the last time his contract came up because of the commission's budget lunacy of the week. And why bash the guy about his theatrical pursuits? Just because he has creative abilities he is gay? I'm sure his wife and kids will be interested to find that out.

Hey I'm with you on the college degree thing. Too many people I know that got a degree by just going through the motions. It's no indication that you're smart enough to tie your own shoes. It just means you hung in there and passed all the required classes. I went to college and got a batchelor's degree. I saw people copy other people's work, study the notes that other students took because they actually showed up for class, and piggybacked on other students projects and knowledge just enough to eek by. They didn't learn a thing, except how to work the system. I know people without a college credit to their name, and they are brilliant, capable, and reliable people that could do just about any job if they set their mind to it.

My degree wasn't in English either, but I still see the value in using proper grammar and spelling as a means of 1) communicating more effectively, and 2)getting individual communications taken a bit more seriously.

Excuse me, but I'm reading over my own post again, and I'd like you to point out where I said anything indicating that I am "so proud" of my degree. I think if you'd pull your highly educated head out of your overgrown butthole, you'd see that I am basically saying college degrees are a dime a dozen, and don't guarantee you know a damn thing. Once you've finished your spelling and grammer check of THIS post, maybe you can unstuff your ego just long enough to see what my point was, instead of crouching like a cat ready to pounce on the first little gnat that moves in front of you. Talk about pride. That's YOU not me. Wow.

For the record, you misspelled another rather key word in your post. At any rate, you're the one who brought up your "bactchelor's degree." That's where the "proud of" comment originated. Nonetheless, English class shouldn't be a priority of yours anyway. You're in more dire need of anger management. Getting so upset over a mere comment on your own mistake is rather childish, don't you think? Do you start slinging insults and vulgarities so easily in your life away from the computer screen?

So - you get on this little ol' blog here and strut your stuff by putting other people down over a spelling or grammer error, to make yourself feel superior to us anonymous booger eaters on here. Actually, my good sir, none of those profiles are accurate. I post from my job, at which I interact with very real people. I am not, nor have I ever been a school teacher. I also don't feel superior to anyone because of any "grammer" [sic] mistakes they are making. This all started with a little comment about an individual who blatantly misspelled a fairly crucial word in his post, and the fact that I found that humorous. You and he became enraged over this and began calling me names.

You get so worked up over a snide comment on the internet that you're practically frothing at the mouth, yet somehow you think I'm the one with no life? I'll agree wholeheartedly that my remark was a bit obnoxious. That notwithstanding, you may want to pop a couple Xanax and take a nap.

You have all been so great at helping me out. I am from New York so I ask alot of questions, when I have an ear that will listen. I am sorry. Is the weather really in the 30's in December? Are there any places to go swimmming? If If I am able to set it up with the Inn would people come if I planned a bbq with hoffman hotdogs, speedies (a marinade sauce for chicken and steak), and burgers. If I did this would people bring a local dish to share? I will bring a few bottles of NY wine, but if people want to drink more they can buy it from the lounge.

The old ditch digger remark is funny. You know, a person can make pretty good money these days digging ditches. A laborer can make about $15 an hour, and if you operate a back hoe, you can do a lot better than that. By the time you add in a little overtime, the ditch diggers are making way more than any school teacher, unless of couse the teacher has a PhD. It's not fair, but it's life. Personally, I'll choose the ditch digger job and not have to deal with disrespectful, undisciplined punks.

TEN MYTHS of Global Warming

MYTH 1: Global temperatures are rising at a rapid, unprecedented rate.

FACT: Accurate satellite, balloon and mountain top observations made over the last three decades have not shown any significant change in the long term rate of increase in global temperatures. Average ground station readings do show a mild warming of 0.6 to 0.8Cover the last 100 years, which is well within the natural variations recorded in the last millennium. The ground station network suffers from an uneven distribution across the globe; the stations are preferentially located in growing urban and industrial areas ("heat islands"), which show substantially higher readings than adjacent rural areas ("land use effects").

There has been no catastrophic warming recorded.

MYTH 2: The "hockey stick" graph proves that the earth has experienced a steady, very gradual temperature increase for 1000 years, then recently began a sudden increase.

FACT: Significant changes in climate have continually occurred throughout geologic time. For instance, the Medieval Warm Period, from around 1000 to1200 AD (when the Vikings farmed on Greenland) was followed by a period known as the Little Ice Age. Since the end of the 17th Century the "average global temperature" has been rising at the low steady rate mentioned above; although from 1940 – 1970 temperatures actually dropped, leading to a Global Cooling scare.

The "hockey stick", a poster boy of both the UN's IPCC and Canada's Environment Department, ignores historical recorded climatic swings, and has now also been proven to be flawed and statistically unreliable as well. It is a computer construct and a faulty one at that.

MYTH 3: Human produced carbon dioxide has increased over the last 100 years, adding to the Greenhouse effect, thus warming the earth.

FACT: Carbon dioxide levels have indeed changed for various reasons, human and otherwise, just as they have throughout geologic time. Sinc

Sorry, apparently there is a limit to how much you can put in a single post. Here is the link that will show you what I tried to put in the above post - http://www.globalwarminghysteria.com/ten-myths-of-global-warming/

Hey there Anonymous - I simply looked at several articles, including ABC News and some other websites. I'm sure I'm full of crap. Anytime I want to know what's really going on in the world from here on out, I'll just place my full trust in the brain trust of anonymous bloggers on the . . . .(had to scroll back to the top so I could recall the name of this thing) Phone Forum Web Blog. You won't catch me trying to learn anything from any of my own incompetent research ever again. And yes, I am blogging under my real name.

Global warming is a non-issue. I'm not saying it exists or it doesn't, just that it is about last thing we need to be worrying about right now. I'm in favor of anything that will make the earth a healthier place to live for us and our children NOW. But until we get health care, the economy, etc. out of the gutter, I don't want to spend time and money on something that may or may not affect the planet in the next few hundred years.

Environmentalists need to show me something demonstrating how this is a bigger problem today than rampant unemployment, then I'll listen.

Great point you make - although I don't think any of us are exactly lobbying to spend money to stop global warming. That would have about the same impact as a flatus released in the midst of a F5 Tornado. If it's not worth discussing on here, it's no big deal to me. Regardless, there are several points of view that do exist, all backed by at least some scientific data.

If you don't think it is an issue that we need to recognize then you need to remember the cap and trade legislation that congress is trying to pass. It is regulation that is designed to control CO2 emissions and it will increase the cost of all forms of energy for every American. It is effectively an energy tax. The issue is not the scientific one it is the political one that will have an impact on our lives.

Hows Obama our president? He wasn't even born in the U.S. I thought the Constitution was specific that you had to be born in the U.S. Is anybody gonna bring this up or do something about it? to quote Don King, "Only in America"!

Are you serious? You really don't think he was born in the US? Please, go back to your bunker and read Michael Savage, and stay away from rational discussion.

I have to say that the above comment about the carnies and the no-carnival fair made me laugh out loud. That was awesome, thanks for the naked truth on that one.

All right gang, the last couple of posts about identifiable businesses and individuals are over the line. I don't have time to babysit you, so you're going to play by the rules or we're going to scrub this blog.

I was wondering how long it was going to take. Dane - any thoughts on moving this to a message board format where people have to sign in to usernames in order to post? That way identified violators could be blocked without having to scrap the whole thing. Just a thought.

I agree. I have been on here for about 10 days and was hoping to help set a trend toward the positive side for our community. I was raised in this community and will likely end my days here. We have our problems, but they are so minor, compared to the whole realm of life. Truthfully, a group of us decided to bombard this site with positive worthwhile 'blogs' hoping to change the content of the Forum. After I read the Review last night, I believe we made a difference. But there is so much garbage that is beyond TRASH to filter through, I'm not sure it is worth it. Why do we have to be like this, aren't we the most advanced organisms on this planet?

I'm guilty of joking around on here a lot just because I like to make satire out of all the negativity and hatred that is displayed on this blog.
I think that everyone that really wants to blog on here should have a user name and password, and Dane will have record of all users and their real names and valid e-mail addresses. That will boil this down to serious bloggers with something to say, and they will either say it in an appropriate manner, or Dane would scrub THEM, and not the entire blog. I see there is also no mechanism on here for reporting offensive posts. There should be. That way Dane won't have to babysit.

I try to say positive things on here once in awhile because I too grew up here and will be here.......the ones that want to cause discontent should meet at that tennis court and do it together and stay off the blog.

I still stand by my posts. They have all been rooted in truth, just some truth people in this town would rather ignore. I agree the language, etc should be clean. Somehow I missed the over the line posts. I still am not sure why people need to know who posts, what's the big deal? I have found that even talking to person face to face does no good, so you might as well make others aware of the situation and hope there is strength in numbers.

Posting here should be no different than standing up in a public forum and expressing yourself. I am all in favor of requiring us to post our identities. Otherwise you will never get away from the sniper fire from the hedgerows.

BS - The "over the line" posts were some jokes yesterday about "goings on" at a local business. They were humorous, but inappropriate. At any rate, I don't think anyone needs to know our real names. We can just keep a password-protected username (e.g. yours could still be "BS") and post under that to eliminate some of the anonymous crap, and to provide a way to kick certains user off the blog for violations.

I know a way to start such a message board, but I believe it would have to be done by Dane. The reason many people post here is the opportunity to have their statements in the paper. A community board run by anyone else would not have that advantage, thus I don't think it would take off. That's why I'd like to encourage Dane to start such a forum.
